Summary |
'The African Queen' was a labour of love for director John Huston, working with two icons of Hollywood in the only film they made together. Bogart plays an alcoholic steamboat captain who is paid to take schoolmarm Hepburn down river to her destination during World War One. The captain's drinking causes the two to bicker relentlessly until Hepburn take decisive action to dispose of his liquor. Shot on location in Africa the film was plagued by difficulties, not the least of which was the director's predilection for big game hunting. Despite these obstacles, the end result is a rollicking adventure film that relies on a deft script rather than special effects to deliver its product. The chemistry between the leads is palpable, both of whom give the impression that they greatly enjoyed themselves. The shoot was immortalised in the film 'White Hunter, Black Heart' (Clint Eastwood, 1990), the book by Peter Viertel of the same name. |
