Summary This bleak, yet intense drama whose title refers to the small amount of body weight that is lost after one's death (signifying the departure of the soul), includes an all star cast, and follows the stories of three individuals whose lives become intertwined by a tragic incident. The opening story sees Paul Rivers awaiting a heart transplant, while his wife is attempting become pregnant with his child through artificial insemination; the second story follows the happily married middle class mother Claudia; and the third story follows Marianne and her husband Jack who is in the midst of reaffirming his commitment to religion while they struggle to support their two children. Each character's past, present, and future stories are documented as non-linear segments that explore powerful themes of love, faith, courage, guilt and death. The film's cinematography creates a slightly uncomfortable level of intimacy: rather than focusing on the context, unstable handheld camera shots centre on the characters (reminiscent of Steven Soderbergh's Traffic, also edited by Stephen Mirrione). Claudia Puig has noted that "21 Grams creates such a palpably dark atmosphere that one sits through the movie almost cowering in dread for what may come next. Yet one emerges extraordinarily moved by the film's harsh beauty".
