Summary
Kluge's breakthrough film is based on the actual biography of a young woman of Jewish descent who arrived in West Germany from the GDR with virtually no possessions.of discontinuous episodes interweaving fictional and semi-documentary sequences in following Anita G (played by Kluge's sister) through a series of encounters which encapsulate something of the realities of life in the West. In foreshadowing his later filmic essays Kluge uses inserts of associative montage as well as a variety of references in the narrative to make ironic comment on the relationship between past and present. The tragedy for Anita is that she cannot escape her past as an outsider by simply crossing to the West.
